Lees dit interview in de Gentoo Linux Newsletter met Ramon van Alteren voor een kijkje achter de schermen bij Hyves met wat leuke feiten en cijfertjes.

“GMN: What is the scale of your website?

Ramon: We currently have over 6 million registered users and counting, peak performance is currently at 150+ million page views per day (13 million per hour). These are filtered page views, raw http requests on our web farm are well over 20.000 req/sec.

On our mysql database backend, we serve roughly 100.000 actions/sec at peak performance. Aside from the web frontend and the database backend we have a very large file-storage for media that our users upload. The total used storage totals around roughly about 280 Terabytes. All in all with all hosts accounted for we have 1800 servers most of them with 2 or 4 cores each. All of these run Gentoo Linux. :-) ”

Niet genoeg bandbreedte

Het is een discussie die op deze blog al meerdere malen gevoerd is, maar ondanks het heilige geloof van sommigen lijkt het toch echt zo te zijn dat we snel tegen de capaciteitsgrenzen van het internet gaan aanlopen. Met name omdat we allemaal TV op het web willen kijken. En dan is 40% van de Europeanen nog niet eens online….

“Cicconi added that more demand for high-definition video will put an increasing strain on the Internet infrastructure. “Eight hours of video is loaded onto YouTube every minute. Everything will become HD very soon, and HD is 7 to 10 times more bandwidth-hungry than typical video today. Video will be 80 percent of all traffic by 2010, up from 30 percent today,” he said.”

Je bent groot en je moet wat

Is het een goede zaak dat Google, Microsoft en Yahoo! alle leuke en innovatieve clubjes opkopen? En voor wie is dat een goede zaak? Ik krijg zelf niet het idee dat de betreffende diensten er beter op geworden zijn, en ik vraag me ook echt af of de toenmalige eigenaren achteraf gezien blij zijn met hun verkoop. Hetzelfde geldt voor de kopers uiteraard;-)

“The Internet is decomposing into a vast array of micro-services that we, the end user, stitches together to make our own unique web experience. It is the de-portalization of the Internet and it is very real. And yet, these large behemoths are trying to do their normal consolidation play on the Internet. First of all, it’s not going to work. They are destroying value with all of their M&A efforts and the bigger they get, the more value they will destroy, for them and their shareholders.”
